He belonged to the Sakya clan in ancient India. His worldly name was Sarva-Siddhartha Gautama.
"Sakyamuni", "Sakya" is the clan's name, "muni" means powerful sage, powerful endurance etc. Sakyamuni means "the Sage of Sakya clan".
