On behalf of all of us here tonight as your guests, on behalf of my parliamentary colleagues, we welcome very much this event, which has become an important part of our calendar of events, each and every year. And for us to be able to understand a lot more about the Chinese culture, there is no better way than being part of gatherings like this, and learning so much more about what the Chinese New Year is all about.

We have just seen the end of the Chinese Year of the Snake, and we are entering now into the Year of the Horse. And the majesty of the horse as a creature, is quite overwhelming to me, I think they are absolutely stunning animals. But to see the majesty of this room as well, is equally overwhelming. I think it¡¦ s just beautiful, absolutely (applause).

So thank you to Master Wang, and to those of our Buddhist community for sharing so much of your culture with us at events like this as well. There are indeed 15 days of celebration for the Chinese New Year, and I am looking forward to joining with our local Chinese community again on Sunday as part of those celebrations. And even more looking forward to the celebrations at the end as well, of this 15 days period, where there will be some beautiful lanterns on display down at Salamanca. So please make sure that you are part of all the festivities that are over these 15 days.

Now this Year of the Horse, I am told that among many things, the Year of the Horse is also about travel. And we hope very dearly that we will be able to welcome President Xi to Tasmania in October of this year. We can never guarantee these things, but it seems to be progressing well, with visits from the Chinese embassy staff to look at how we could in fact put forward a programme to the President.

So we hope in this Year of the Horse, we will indeed be able to welcome President Xi to Tasmania, and be able to extend that hand of friendship from our state to that enormous country of China, and particularly of course to our sister province of the Fujian Province, with whom we have a relationship of some 33 years. So look out for that visit, and I am sure we will give President Xi a very warm Tasmanian welcome. I should say there is also a gift waiting for President Xi on behalf of Master Wang and our Buddhist community, of a stunning portrait which we hope to be able to present to him personally on his visit here with his wife.

The fact is that we have some long connections with China, and with the people from China who had made Tasmania home. In fact it¡¦ s over a century of people we had living in our state, and it¡¦ s wonderful that we have this growing bond and connection,
and that we can enrich our lives with the mix of multicultural communities that we have. But I also want to recognize as did on our behalf tonight, our local Aboriginal community who are the traditional owners of this land, who enable us to also be able to mix and be part of what is a very rich culture that we live within. So thank you Aunty Eva for being here tonight on behalf of the local Tasmanian Aboriginal community.
